I also would like to add some "marketing" text for each category that will be placed on the pages displaying the talks of that category. Please help me in writing these texts. This means people who bring along their computer will receive some Linux distribution and various free (as in free beer) Oracle softwares in addition and help in installing the sotware on the spot. The event will be hold in parallel to the regular talks probably on all 3 days for about 1.5 hours so if you are interested you will be able to pick the day you would like to drag along your desktop. I'll check with the Collage if we can provide the necessary screens/keyboards/mice for those who bring their desktop. See details on http://www.osdc.org.il/installfest.html Not just Oracle.... Maybe some people here would like to get organized and do similar installparty/installfest using strictly free software during the conference. (Orcale gives a nice sum of money as sponsorship so if other companies will want to do similar events we will ask for their sponsorship as well) For a community based install party/fest that is free of charge. Besides, HaMakor already gives sponsorship anyway. If there is a volunteer to organize it I would be glad to allocate timeslots during the conference parallel to the other talks. I did not have the time and the courage to keep such a long running diary so I guess I'll have to send many small updates in the coming week, just before the conference. So this is the first one. Sponsors ========= First of all you'll see the names of the sponsors at the top and the bottom of these messages. In other conferences sponsors get spots in the main track to give their marketing talk. In OSDC marketing is kept at very low level. We want to focus on technical content and being grassroot. Hence what the main sponsors get are these lines on our announcements and they can also fill the conference bag with their marketing material. I really would like to thank all our sponsors as without their support this conference could not be organized. Full list of sponsors: http://www.osdc.org.il/sponsors.html Population =========== As of Thursday, 16th February there were 132 people who committed to come to the conference either as speakers or by paying the registration fee. Wiki ====== The conference now has a wiki that can be used to share information. http://wiki.osdc.org.il/ It has yet another separate registration system. Transportation =============== There are several ways to arrive to the Netanya Academic Collage, we are still lacking clear directions, so if there is someone out there who could write down how to get to the collage from the train station and/or how to get there by bus it would be of much help to others as well. you can post your description to the discussion mailing list or on our wiki. Car-pooling =========== There are many people coming from Jerusalem and other distant areas. I would like to encourage everyone to share their transportation weather that's a car a bicycle or a public bus. Again, you can discuss this on the mailing list or on the wiki. Gabor ps. After all this turned to be quite a long message. That's one of the most time consuming part of the organization. Writing invoices and receipts without making too many mistakes. In the afternoon I am going to pick up Larry Wall from the airport and we are heading to Jerusalem. Thanks for everyone who offered his place for Larry we have settled with Daniel Ariel in Rehavia. We are planning to go to the (kosher) restaurant Limonim in the Han theatre with Audrey Tang, Gaal Yahas and if Larry is not too tired from the flight, he will join us as well. I have reserved a table for "Perl" at 18:30. We will arrive between 18:30-19:00. If you would like to join us please drop me an e-mail or call me so if there are many peole I can reserve a larger table. For previous messages go to the archives: http://www.osdc.org.il/mailinglists.html >From now on I am goint to send these to both the news list and the discussion list. If you get it twice you can safely delete one of them. Schedule ============ The schedule of the conference seems to be quite stable now. There were a few minor changes since I published it originally but it looks quite ok now. http://www.osdc.org.il/schedule.html Population =========== One of the most un-nerving situations during the organization was about 4 days before the early-bird dead line. There were 36 speakers and 5 or 6 paying visitors. The whole conference seemed like a dead idea. Then, just in the last 4 days over 50 people paid their particiaption fee. It was still a low number but the picture was definietly much brighter. We had very similar situations in the previous YAPCs but because of the scale of this conference things seemed a lot worse than in the previous years. The latest head count of people who confirmed their participation in some way is 152. History ============ As I already posted on the discussion list Larry Wall has arrived and we had a nice dinner in Jerusalem: http://www.osdc.org.il/html/20060219_gabor/ Now you can see what are my photo skilz, so you better prepare your own camera for the conference.... Conference Dinner ================= On Sunday, 26th Febrary 2006, the first day of the conference we are going to have a dinner. Every attendee of the conference is invited. The dinner is included in every conference pass. This might be another good chance to talk to fellow developers. Meet Audrey, Larry and the other speakers. Hackathon ======== Tomorrow, on 21st February, we are heading to the north. About 10 people including Audrey, Larry, Gaal, Yuval Kogman will stay on Arbel for 5 days and will work on Pugs, the first implementation of Perl6. http://www.osdc.org.il/hackathon.html If you are interested to follow what are they doing you can point your browser to http://www.pugscode.org/ or better yet, join #perl6 on IRC. regards Gabor From szabgab at gmail.com Wed Feb 22 12:35:07 2006 From: szabgab at gmail.com (Gabor Szabo) Date: Wed, 22 Feb 2006 22:35:07 +0200 Subject: [OSDC Israel News] Headcount, Food, Installfest, Schedule update Message-ID: Headcount update ================= There are now 181 confirmed participants. Food during the conference ========================== Refreshements: Everyone will get refreshments in the morning and in the two main breaks. Lunch: Speakers and people who paid the full (company) fee will get voucher to eact lunch. The rest of the people will need to arrange for themself (bring your own food or eat in the local eatery of the collage, or go out from the collage and buy some food there. Dinner: As mentioned in the previous message everybody is invited to the dinner on Sunday evening. Its included in every conference pass. We have to leave the place by 23:00. Kashrut: http://www.osdc.org.il/html/netanya_kashrut.pdf Installfest ============ In parallel to the three tracks of the conference we are also organizing Installfests. The original request came from Oracle but it is not just them now and there still are a few timeslots to do your own installfest. If you bring a computer (either notebook or desktop) there will be people to help you install some software and get started. Oracle Installfest ------------------ Here you will get some Enterprise Linux distribution and some Oracle software free of charge full of help to install it. See http://www.osdc.org.il/installfest.html and the wiki for details. WAMP Intsallfest ----------------- WAMP stands for (Microsoft) Windows, Apache, MySQL and in this case Perl and mod_perl. Issac Goldstand (who is also a speaker) will be available to help you get started with the WAMP stack See the schedule: http://www.osdc.org.il/schedule.html and the wiki: http://wiki.osdc.org.il/index.php/Installfests#WAMP *BSD Installfest ----------------- BSD gets much less hype than Linux nowedays but it has its own special powers. Dan Pelleg will run a *BSD installfest on Sunday, 26th. For details check the wiki or the mailing list. http://wiki.osdc.org.il/index.php/Installfests#BSD Other Installfests can still be organized. Decide what would like to do and suggest a timeslot with content. On Monday, after the talks we have time for BOFs. There are currently two BOFs planned. Check the wiki http://wiki.osdc.org.il/index.php/BOFs and get organized for it. Especially the keysigning BOF needs some preparation. AFAIK people who want to participate need to prepare they keys and bring them on paper. I just added mine. Auction ========= The tradition of the Perl confernces is to run an auction on the last day. We had such an auction last year in Israel where we raised more than 1000 USD which was the starting money of this conference. I hope this year we will be able to raise much more money for next years conference. I will also bring along a couple of books I don't need any more to be sold on tha auction. You can do so as well. On these auctions we sell the presents received from sponsors e.g. computer books, software licenses, hardware, T-shirts and other valuable items. Prepare lots of cash as this is a fun way to help the community. The organizers of OSDC::Israel are glad to announce that the next conference will be held on 20-22 February 2007. There will be additional events such as tutorials and a Perl 6 hackathon near the main conference; the exact schedule will be announced in the next month or so. OSDC::Israel is an international conference for Open Source Developers, running now in its second year in this form and as Yet Another Perl Conference (YAPC) for the three years prior to that. The conference has attracted renowned speakers worldwide, such as Mark-Jason Dominus, Audrey Tang and Larry Wall. This year's conference is held in participation with ICSEM '07, the Israeli Conference of Software Engineering and Management. Our venue is the Netanya Academic College, which has already graciously hosted us last year. We would like to invite speakers, volunteers, attendees and sponsors. Guests We already have two guests: * Audrey Tang, of Perl fame, lead developer of Pugs * Zeev Suraski, the CTO of Zend, maker of PHP Speakers A detailed Call for Papers can be found on the conference web site (). If you believe you have something interesting to say about software development, deployment, or management, especially in the Open Source context, we would like to hear from you. Past topics included (but were not limited to): * Code techniques (Perl, PHP, Python, Ruby) * Powerful tools for any of the above * Interaction between technologies in Open Source * Software testing * Management techniques * How to make money from writing Open Source software * Future plans from language designers Main track talks will be 20, 45, or 90 minutes in length; in addition, there will be a lightning talk session intended for less experienced speakers or for those with small or humorous topics. Volunteers OSDC is a very low cost conference in the spirit of open participation and community sharing. One way of giving back to the community is to offer your time for any of these: * Design the web site of the conference - * Designing, printing, and distributing conference posters/flyers * Administrative help with billing * Production help (our interface to food, A/V, and other providers) * Assemble conference material * Docmaster (edit and produce conference proceedings) Any help you can give in one or more of these categories will be well appreciated! Attendees We are seeing a growing number of conference-goers, both from Israel and international guests. OSDC is growing nicely and we are happy for it! If you have any questions about arranging a visit to Israel please contact the organizers (see below). Tell and bring your friends! Sponsors OSDC is a gathering of highly skilled technological people. If you have benefited from the effort of Open Source people in the past, please consider sponsoring the event. We are not a commercial conference but your support will be acknowledged fairly. There is an option of a job fair this year; contact the organizers if your company is interested in participating. Communication: Mailing lists, wiki In order to ease communication the conference has two mailing lists: * Announcement list: * Discussion list: If you have not done so yet, please subscribe at least to the announcement list in order not to miss any important news. In addition we have a wiki: . The main conference web site: . Organizers Please direct all queries to organizers at osdc.org.il. Even though we started the process early this year, due to lack of time I was not able to finish the management software on time and to do all the organizational things. Therefore I have no cancel or at least postpone the event. Later on I'll look at my schedule to see if it is possible to do it in June-July 2007 or if we can only do it again in February 2008. Your opinion is welcome here. Next to the conference we planned to do a Pugs Hackathon. As it requires much less effort to organize that I am quite sure we will have a 1 week long Pugs Hackathon sometime around end of February, beginning of March with Audrey Tang. If you are interested to participate (even for 2-3 days) please let me know. regards Gabor http://www.osdc.org.il/
