One of the main "attractions" at any Open Source Developer Conference
is the guest "star" speakers. 2006's Larry and Audrey were great, and
were one of the main reasons that i decided to pay my money and come.
I tried to think of people that i would be interested to see in the
next conference. The first name that sprung up was Theo de Raadt, the
leader of OpenBSD. Even though i have never actually used OpenBSD, i
am quite curious about their "code auditing" process - i am a
certified fanatic of clean and robust code. This topic may seem dull
and extremely geeky, but Theo is known as a guy with personality, so
he can make this interesting.
Another person would be Lawrence Lessig - founder of Creative Commons
and author of the book "Free Culture". His book tells about the the
draconian copyright laws, the way that media cartels are using them to
sustain their outdated business model and the irreversible damage that
these things do to human civilization - no less. These are the things
that should encourage open source developers to stick to the ideals of
freedom.
My third idea for a guest speaker is in between these two extremes -
Damian Conway, a well-known contributor to Perl and CPAN and the
author of "Perl Best Practices" and several other books. His writing,
both in Perl and in English is clear and to-the-point, and he is an
experienced conference speaker.
A couple of other possible guest speakers are Sir Tim Berners Lee and
Richard M. Stallman, who need no introduction.
